Very early pregnancy symptoms can happen even before a missed period or a positive pregnancy test.

Could you be pregnant?

Of course, the most definite pregnancy symptom is the positive pregnancy test , right?

Right!. Although, to be honest even that may not be 100% reliable.

However, even before you can take a test, and before your period due date you may suspect that you are in fact pregnant. You may experience a few of the very early pregnancy symptoms, and you may have a feeling that something is happening inside your body…

How early can you start feeling things? After conceiving, the fertilized egg travels to the uterus and embeds in the uterine lining. If you can pinpoint ovulation, then you know that implantation can take place anywhere from about 5 days to 12 days past ovulation. After that, your body starts secreting various hormones, getting your body ready for the job of growing a fetus.

You will not have any symptoms of pregnancy before implantation because your body doesn’t know if the egg is fertilized or not until it implants into the uterine lining. When this happens that the body is signaled -I’m pregnant – and that’s when it’s possible for signs and symptoms of early pregnancy to take place. Keep in mind that some women will have no symptom of pregnancy other than a missed period and still be pregnant.

That’s when you can start feeling some or all of the common pregnancy signs as your body reacts to those new hormone levels. Although every woman is different, and your symptoms will likely not be the same as mine were, but there are certain early signs that can in fact confirm that you are pregnant.

Keep in mind that each of these symptoms by itself may have a different reason and by itself is not a surefire sign pregnancy.

First of all, most of these symptoms, are very similar to the PMS symptoms that many women experience every month before their period starts. This is due to the fact that every month – pregnant or not – your body is getting ready for the pregnancy – just in case!

Also, if you are not feeling anything, don’t despair.

Many women do not feel any symptoms at all in the early days. In fact, that’s what happened to me when I was trying desperately to get pregnant. I remember during that period, there were many times that I was almost 100% positive that I was pregnant, and yet I was not.

When it finally happened, I didn’t notice any special symptoms, in fact, I was POSITIVE that I was NOT pregnant, until I was about 7 weeks – at which point I took a pregnancy test and was very surprised (and insanely HAPPY) with the results!

15+ (Almost) Surefire Early Pregnancy Signs

So what are the early pregnancy signs?

What are early pregnancy symptoms?

You can have very early signs can happen even before a missed period or a positive pregnancy test. Especially the 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks pregnant signs. Early pregnancy symptoms and signs are usually related to the pregnancy hormone hCG or “Human Chorionic Gonadotropin” which is responsible for pregnancy signs. Even though hCG is usually not detectable in large number until after a missed menstrual period, there are many women who report having typical pregnancy symptoms even before they miss their period. There are early detection pregnancy tests available than can confirm pregnancy as early as 6 – 8 days after conception has occurred (well before a missed period).

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #1:. Missed menstrual period

In some cases, this is the only pregnancy symptom that women notice. A missed period is one of the obvious signs of pregnancy. But keep in mind, there may be other reasons for missing a period, including stress, illness, hormone imbalance, reactions to foods or medications, gaining or losing large amount of weight, and stopping hormone contraceptives. If you normally have a very regular menstrual cycle, missing a period can be a reliable sign of conception.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #2. Tender, swollen breasts

Breast tenderness happens because your body starts producing more estrogen and progesterone. These changes can make your breasts feel heavy and sore. You may notice changes in breast size or shape, soreness, darker aureoles, and tender nipples – these are all common signs of early pregnancy. However, for me it was never a surefire sign, as I’m one of the lucky (not!) women who experience tenderness in their breasts just before or after ovulation, so this symptom alone does not necessarily mean you are pregnant. This sensitivity may go away later in the pregnancy.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #3: Implantation Bleeding

This did not happen to me, but I know that approximately 1/3 of pregnant women experience this and they mistakenly think that this is their period coming. When the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, it might result in some light bleeding. It is not like a normal period, however, is very light and usually brownish or pink. If it does happen, it will normally be about a week before you would expect your period.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #4: Strong Sense of Smell and Taste

Heightened sensitivity to smells and tastes is common during early pregnancy. You will become more aware of different smells in your environment like you never were before. When I was pregnant, in the office where I worked I discovered new smells that I never noticed before. Especially smells and tastes of various foods can trigger strong reactions, including nausea and vomitting.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #5: Fatigue / Tiredness

Being tired all the time is a very common symptom of early pregnancy. I remember I felt exhausted and always ready for a nap. This is caused by soaring levels of progesterone, which – in high doses, can even put you to sleep. At the same time, you will have lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and increased blood production – that can all contribute to your tiredness. It’s your body’s reaction to it’s new state of transition. Fortunately, for most women energy levels usually increase during the second trimester, so most women will feel better and have more stamina during the rest of your pregnancy, or at least until the last trimester. The best treatment is to simply get lots of rest and avoid stressful activities that may wear you out.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #6: Elevated basal body temperature

Your basal body temperature is temperature taken orally when you wake up in the morning. Your body temperature rises slightly soon after ovulation and remains at that level until the day of your period. Some women track their basal body temperature to determine when their most fertile time of month occurs. If their basal body temperature does not drop for more than two weeks this may mean that they’re pregnant.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #7 Food Cravings and Aversions

You may crave certain foods, or feel strong aversions towards food you normally like. Why does that happen? As in the case of other symptoms, hormonal changes are responsible for these new food preferences, especially in the first trimester, when hormone levels change most dramatically. I personally really had no cravings in my first pregnancy – just felt super hungry all the time!

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #8 Morning Sickness/Vomiting

Nausea and/or vomiting, aka morning sickness, is one of the classic symptoms of pregnancy. Only about 50% of women experience nausea. It is a myth that it only happens in the morning – actually it can happen at any time of day, some women have “all day sickness.” For some women, the queasiness begins as early as two weeks after conception and usually ends with the beginning of the second trimester.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #9 Cramping

After implantation your uterus starts to contract, and you will can feel cramping and pulling in your lower abdomen caused by these contractions.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #10 Frequent Urination

You will be going to use the bathroom a lot! Frequent urination can be one of the very early signs of being pregnant, and will continue throughout the entire pregnancy. Your uterus is getting larger as the womb prepares for the baby, putting additional pressure on the bladder.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #11 Larger waistline and bloating

You may find your pants feel snug as your waistline expands. It’s common to feel uncomfortable with anything tight around the waist.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #12 Constipation.

An increase in progesterone slows down food passing through the intestines, which can lead to constipation.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #13 Headaches

Some women experience headaches early in the pregnancy, that are most likely caused by increased blood circulation.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #14 Feeling dizzy and lightheaded

These feelings can be caused by dropping blood pressure and/or low blood sugar.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #15 Frequent Mood Swings

Many women experience frequent mood swings. If you find yourself laughing, weeping, and screaming all at the same time, it does not you are getting crazy. You may just be pregnant, and the changing hormone levels are causing this emotional upheaval.

Pregnancy Sign / Symptom #16: Darkening of the Areolas

Your body starts getting ready for breastfeeding very early in pregnancy. One of the ways it prepares is through the darkening of the aerolas – the area around the nipple. I have heard that this is so the baby will see the nipples better, or perhaps it is just because of an increase in blood flow to the breasts. It is a very common symptom. It has lasted throughout both of my pregnancies.

If you experienced a symptom that I have not mentioned here – let me know below, in the comments section.

You are pregnant – Congratulations!

OK, so you are pregnant. Now what?

First of all take that pregnancy test and make an appointment with your doctor.

In the meantime take good care of yourself. The first weeks of your baby’s life are extremely important. If you haven’t already, give up any unhealthy habits, such smoking and alcohol. Eat healthy, take some folic acid, and get enough rest. And most of all enjoy that time of the pregnancy, because –even though often unpleasant – it does not last long.

If you are pregnant and wish to listen to your baby’s heartbeat – learn about buying or renting a baby heartbeat monitor to listen to your unborn baby’s sounds.

If you are not pregnant

If you are not pregnant, but are trying to conceive, read my hub How to get pregnant fast: Some tips for getting pregnant quickly.
Generally, it is recommended that if you are over 35 and you are trying to conceive for 6 months or more, then you should consult a specialist to rule out any potential problems. Some studies have shown that about one-third of women between age 35 and 39 and two-thirds of women over 40 have fertility problems.

If you are under 35, you can give yourself more time – up to one year.

If you don’t notice any signs of ovulation, or your periods are irregular, you should definitely let your doctor know. This information may help your doctor make a diagnosis of infertility.

If you find yourself in that situation, I highly recommend that you read the book “Inconceivable” by Julia Indichova. Also, visit her website Fertile Heart and join the community. You can read some amazing stories and get support through your journey. Good luck to you!

Is your husband experiencing pregnancy symptoms too?

Why do some men experience pregnancy symptoms such as vomiting and nausea when their wives are pregnant?: Scientific American
When pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, weight gain, mood swings and bloating occur in men, the condition is called couvade, or sympathetic pregnancy. Depending on the human culture, couvade can also encompass ritualized behavior by the father during the labor and delivery of his child. Couvade has a long anecdotal history and is named from the French verb couver, which translates as ?to hatch? or “to brood.” The phenomenon has received attention from biologists only quite recently, however.

Are you trying to conceive a girl?

You hear all that all the time “the only thing that matters is ten fingers, ten toes, and healthy”. While I can’t disagree that having a healthy baby is top priority for most couples who are trying to conceive, but fact is that most people do have a preference for the gender of their baby.

In fact, thousands of prospective parents search each day for information on how to have a baby boy or girl – so do not feel bad that you have a preference either. I couldn’t swear to the accuracy of this but there have been studies that claim something like 84% of people do have a preference, which is why there are so many websites on how to have a boy or girl baby.

If you have been dreaming about having a baby girl, you may be wondering if there is anything that you can do to naturally increase your chances of conceiving a girl. There are several gender selection methods that have been developed and described, with the most well-known being so-called Dr. Shettles method.

Dr. Landrum B. Shettles has developed its method basing it on a few simple observations regarding the distinctive features of the girl sperm versus boy sperm. Girl sperm (sperm carrying the X chromosome) are larger and stronger than boy sperm (with the Y chromosome). Girl sperm is more likely to live longer and withstand harsh conditions better than boy sperm.

Tips for Conceiving a Girl Naturally

Timing the intercourse

Have intercourse regularly from the time your period ends until 2.5 to 3 days prior to ovulation and then stop. Abstain 2.5 days prior to ovulation to 3 days past ovulation, because this time is most conducive to conceiving a boy.

This may be tricky for many women, especially if your periods are not regular or if you are not familiar with the natural methods of ovulation prediction. Two of these methods that are most often used involve observation of the cervical mucous and charting the basal body temperature.

How to have a girl?

However, since length of follicular phase can vary between cycles, it may not be easy to exactly pinpoint the right moment for time intercourse. (Follicular phase is the first phase of your menstrual cycle during which follicles in the ovary mature; starting on the first day of your menstrual period and ending the day you ovulate – see the illustration below).

Having intercourse with shallow penetration

It is said that having intercourse with shallow penetration – for example, in the missionary position – is likely to result in conceiving a girl. The environment in the vagina is more acidic as you move farther from the cervix toward the vaginal opening, so the male sperm are more likely to die on the way to the egg.

The woman should NOT have an orgasm

Or woman has an orgasm first, before the man ejaculates. When a woman is having an orgasm, her vagina and reproductive tract release alkaline substances that favor boy sperm.

Increase acidity of the woman’s body

Male sperm are less likely to survive in the acidic environment. Methods that can be tried to make your body more acidic is adjusting your diet to eat foods that produce more acidic PH balance, or doing a vinegar douche right before intercourse (I do not recommend douching as it carries a risk of infection).

Ovulation Prediction Chart

Natural Gender Determination Methods: Are they effective?

There are some statistics that claim that about 75% of couples will be successful in choosing whether they conceive a girl or a boy of their child using Dr. Shettles method. Of course it’s not guaranteed that you will conceive a girl using this techniques, or that you even become pregnant in the first place.

If you are trying to get pregnant, keep in mind that with this method you are limiting the number of days you have intercourse, which diminishes your chances of becoming pregnant.

On average, the chances of getting pregnant each month are rather low. Even healthy couples without any known fertility issues who are trying to conceive should remember that success may take time and effort. There is an approximately 25 % chance that the sperm will fertilize the egg; so a healthy couple who times intercourse properly has only a 25 % chance to conceive each month. The fewer days that you have intercourse while you are fertile, the lower your odds of getting pregnant.

Sperm Spinning and Intrauterine Insemination

If you are really determined to conceive a girl you may try a more technologically advanced – but also more costly – method of gender determination. Have your partner’s sperm spun and then have intrauterine insemination procedure with only male sperm. This method is close to 100% effective. Boy sperm are lighter than girl sperm. When the sperm is spun in a container it causes all of the boy sperm to float to the top while all of the girl sperm sink to the bottom. This method will cost about $500.00.

When you finally decide that you are ready to have a baby, you will probably want to conceive as quickly as possible. I know I did – and I got very impatient (and worried) when after several months I still was not pregnant. You may be one of the lucky few if you succeed after the first month or two, because on average it takes a couple of months of trying to finally get that positive result on the pregnancy test.

How to get pregnant fast: A few tips for getting pregnant quickly

There are many things a couple can do to improve their chances of getting pregnant quickly – these include the appropriate diet to conceive, knowledge of the ovulation cycle, and of course the assisted reproductive technology procedures (ART) for those who for some reason cannot succeed with natural methods.

However, if you have no physical problems preventing you from getting pregnant, then these simple tips may help you get started in your efforts to successful pregnancy.

Trying to conceive

Many people when they finally decide it’s the right time for them to have kids, want the pregnancy to happen as fast as possible.

Trying to conceive can be an exiting time in your life, but it can also be very frustrating, if it does not happen right away. I remember I was upset every time my period showed up again, and kept wondering if there was any physical problem that was preventing me from getting pregnant.

If you are getting worried, do not panic and give yourself some time. Unlike many other things in your life, pregnancy is very difficult to control, and getting pregnant is not an exact science. However, there are some things you can do to make sure you get pregnant quicker.

Tips for getting pregnant quickly

Know when you are most fertile!

Pregnancy occurs when you have intercourse during your fertile period, i.e. 2-3 days around the time you ovulate, once one of the sperm fertilizes the egg that you have released. You only release one egg per month, so you have about 12 opportunities each year to get pregnant.

So the most important thing you can do to speed up the process is to figure out exactly when you are ovulating and have intercourse during that “window of opportunity” time. Your egg can live for about 12-36 hours, sperm can usually live for 3-5 days. So the best day to try to conceive would be before ovulation or on the ovulation day itself.

Ovulation is easy to detect, once you know what signs to look for. Some signs of ovulation warn you that ovulation is approaching, allowing you to time intercourse for pregnancy. Other signs of ovulation let you know that ovulation has passed.

Changes in cervical mucous – When you’re not ovulating, your cervical mucus may be absent, or appear sticky or creamy in consistency. When ovulation is getting closer, cervical mucus becomes more abundant, and its consistency resembles raw egg white, and can stretch up to an inch or more. While tracking cervical mucus is one of the best and easiest ways to predict your most fertile time of the month, keep in mind that certain medications, such as Clomid, may have a side-effect of drying up your cervical mucus.

Changes in body basal temperature – Tracking body basal temperature is a most popular method of tracking ovulation among women trying to get pregnant. Your body basal temperature will rise by a few tenths of a degree, and stay elevated, after ovulation. This rise in temperature is caused by the hormone progesterone, which increases immediate after ovulation. By charting your body basal temperature, you can detect this increase in temperature. This method will not warn you that the ovulation is coming, it will only tell you that you have already ovulated.

Changes in cervical position – When you’re most fertile, your cervix will be higher, softer, and more open. Detecting cervical position takes a little practice, but this method may help you when your cervical mucous is dried out by Clomid or other medications.

Breast tenderness – Some women experience tenderness in their breasts just before or after ovulation. This is related to the hormones rushing in your body, getting ready for the potential of pregnancy.

Tracking your cycle. If your periods are regular, then counting days of your cycle can be an easy and reliable way to track ovulation. The first day of a woman’s period is 14 days after ovulation. The number of days between ovulation and the start of the next period is fairly consistent among all women. So, for example, if you have a 30 day cycle, you will ovulate on day 16 (30-14=16). Day 1 is the first day of her next period.

If your cycles are regular, you can use this ovulation calculator to establish your ovulation date:

However, the number of days between the start of the period and the next ovulation can vary quite a bit between women, or even from month to month for the same woman. So if your cycles vary in length or you frequently miss periods, you will not get very accurate information with this method.

Of course, you can just take an easy way, and just have an intercourse every other day of the month. Why not just have it every day? We don’t want to wear your partner down, do we? But seriously, this is to ensure higher sperm count and sperm which can live longer.

Another easy solution is to purchase an ovulation prediction kit. You can find those in the most pharmacies and big grocery stores in the feminine aisle. You’ll have to follow directions on the package to detect your most fertile days. Then it is up to you to try on these days to conceive.

More Tips for Getting Pregnant Quickly

First of all, relax and enjoy the process! Stress can negatively impact your fertility, so try to replace any negative thoughts that you may have with positive images of your future pregnancy and parenthood.
Make your love making enjoyable. Sometimes when a couple is trying to conceive it will affect the quality of their love making, making it more a chore or duty, than pleasure.

Some studies also show that when women orgasm, it creates an alkaline state in the vagina that sperm prefer over the normal acid conditions. If you have an orgasm at the same time or shortly after your partner ejaculates, it increases the opportunity for sperm to survive the trip to the cervix. Enjoyable love making also means higher sperm count and better “swimmers”.

Lie down after intercourse for 15-20 minutes. Standing up immediately can cause the semen to leak out. Try waiting twenty minutes before getting up and moving around. You can also try putting a pillow under your pelvis to help tilt your body so the sperm can travel upwards easier.

Your partner should avoid overheating or constricting his testicles. Some studies have shown that sperm counts drop when men wear tight pants or underwear. He should also avoid saunas and hot tubs.

Eat a healthy diet. Start taking folic acid and prenatal vitamins. Folic acid and other vitamins are very important during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption, do not use drugs at the time of conception. Not only it is unhealthy for you and your unborn child, these substances also negatively affect fertility.

You are still not pregnant: Now what?

Generally, it is recommended that if you are over 35 and you are trying to conceive for 6 months or more, then you should consult a specialist to rule out any potential problems. Some studies have shown that about one-third of women between age 35 and 39 and two-thirds of women over 40 have fertility problems.
If you are under 35, you can give yourself more time – up to one year.

If you don’t notice any signs of ovulation, or your periods are irregular, you should definitely let your doctor know. This information may help your doctor make a diagnosis of infertility. You will need to see an infertility specialist, and your partner may need to contact a urologist.
